WixMobile: free mobile website template builder

Note from 2026: WixMobile, the separate mobile builder this post is about, no longer exists. Wix sites handle mobile layouts in the main editor now, and most site builders produce responsive sites by default. I have kept the post as a snapshot of 2011, when a phone-only version of your site was a real product category.

Building mobile websites was never as easy as it was after WixMobile launched. Yes, it came from Wix.com, which we already used to build websites for free. Now we could build mobile ones too.

Anyone who knew Wix knew how simple it was. Creating a mobile site with WixMobile took 3 to 4 minutes, in three steps:

  1. Choose a template.
  2. Customise it.
  3. Publish.

It felt like counting one, two, three and done. What knowledge did you need? None.

Why I liked it

  • It saved time and resources.
  • No code needed.
  • A friendly interface.
  • It worked on almost any phone of the time.
  • It was free.

The three steps

After signing in, you clicked Go Mobile, which was on every page.

1. Choose a template

A gallery of mobile templates opened. Picking one finished the first step.

2. Customise it

The builder asked for the site's title and a category, then took you to the page editor. There you could add buttons for call, email, Facebook, Twitter, text links, maps and directions, add pages, change the header and add content.

3. Publish

One click on Publish and the mobile site was live.

Looking back

Separate mobile sites (often on an m. subdomain) were the norm in 2011. Responsive design, one site that adapts to every screen, replaced them within a few years. It is easier to maintain, it keeps one URL per page, and it is what search engines prefer.
